180° Turn Around
Mental illness, also called mental health disorders, refers to a wide range of mental health conditions or disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. No one is spared from the possibility of suffering from mental illness. Regardless how rich a person is, how smart he/she is, anyone can be a victim of mental illness.
According to the 2017 report of the World Health Organization, eight in every 100, 000 Filipinos commit suicide. Six of these are males while two are females between the ages of 15 and 29. The same report showed that everyday an average of 3,000 people around the world take their own lives or every 40 seconds there is a suicide case.
Considering the statistics shown above it is important to raise mental awareness. Awareness eliminates stigma for these people. If people are aware of their limitations and strengths, stigma may disappear. Stigma refers to the opinions and thoughts of the community. Stigma shames the mentally ill. It creates a community where minds are closed off and rejects acceptance of those who are “different”.
Awareness can create new improvements for the mentally ill. But creating awareness is a difficult task. If we have raise more awareness, the demands may increase and can result in more funding for their needs. Also raising awareness can reduce misconceptions.
